Hiking up Mount Rigi, Switzerland

Autumn is setting in, infusing shades of red and yellow into the greens, and the misty smell of dried leaves in the air. On a warm enough day at this time, it is a privilege to be in the midst of nature. With a friend visiting us this weekend, we set about hiking up Mount Rigi.

The setting took my breath away right from the start.. also literally, because though the paths look as if they are plain, they are actually a steep-ish incline throughout.

Not being mentally prepared for the gradient (don’t ask me what I expected it was going to be like), I realized I could not have completed it had I come alone. But it turned out just lovely, thanks to my dear husband.

The hike was filled with little joys like streams of water which you first detect by the sound from a distance..

.. a host of mountain-bikers who will fill you with awe (and also some confusion. Where walking was strenuous, biking obviously commanded a lot of focus and grit. I wondered why they didn’t choose to simply enjoy the scenery. Perhaps they live there and see it everyday.. I didn’t get a chance to ask them, but greeted them all with an encouraging ‘Gruezi’).

.. and that moment of joy mixed with fear, when you spot a herd of Swiss cows running down a hill (yes, they run! Down a hill..no silly business of falling or slipping).. and because you are so transfixed by the sight, find them charging almost at you.

And while it was all about the journey, was it a pleasure to experience the view from the top!
