A Box of Sunshine

Beginnings excite me.. as do endings in a different, subtle way.. as do changes of season.. and birthdays.. and of course new years’ days!

Some may argue that there really is no ‘beginning’ or ‘ending’, that it is all a continuum, or an incessant cycle at best, and they would be right. But to my simple mind, looking for reasons to commemorate, celebrate, or negotiate.. not to mention looking for occasions to pause, categorize, memorize and re-prioritize, a new year’s day arrives laden with meaning and promise.

I feel like the snake who has shed an old skin. Though I absolutely abhor reptiles, I could not find a better metaphor. It is indeed odd what one finds where. Like this idea I stumbled upon on Facebook. It proposed that instead of new years’ resolutions, why not observe a different practice this year- of filling a jar with a memory every time something good happens.. And oh, that just called out to me.

So here we are, my husband and I, with our own ‘Box of Sunshine’ as we call it. We started the practice already this morning, and in my excitement I already planted several chits in it- including, well, something about finding the clothes-washing slot that we wanted. I also proposed adding the now day-long success of the odd-even car numbers practice to reduce pollution in Delhi. My husband prefers to wait another week to add that.

I feel there’s a momentum to this practice- and hope it will be upward! I look forward to opening all the chits at the end of the year and reading them, and hopefully smiling. More than that, I look forward to the thankful moments of writing the chits.

Happy 2016!

  1. We did this last year! Opening all the chits was great fun. It made us realize that our brains are wired to remember the negative things more.

    The box looks beautiful!

    Happy new year 🙂
